Overview

With regards to the ongoing JCAR project (joint cooperation between Egypt and the Netherlands for applied research) and the activities of the research project (Performance Enhancement of Pump Stations for Irrigation and Drainage (PEPSI)), a workshop entitled "Pump system assessment from conceptual to operational arrangements" was implemented in the presence of Dr. Ayman El-Sayed, Head of the Mechanics and Electricity Department (MED), Dr. Sami Saad, Director of the Hydraulics Research Institute and the supervisor of the Mechanical and Electrical Research Institute (MERI), Dr Sonja Pans, the Deputy JCAR team leader and Mr. Anton De Fockert, PEPSI Leader from the Deltares. The workshop was attended by 27 engineers and experts in the field from the various departments of MED and NWRC.

Over the course of two days, the workshop focused on the conceptualization and technical assessment stages, aiming to understand the current status of pump stations from both technical and financial perspectives. Through engaging brainstorming sessions, participants collaborated to develop a survey sheet that will enable a comprehensive assessment of instrument status.

To enhance practical learning and bridge the gap between theory and reality, a field trip to El-Kalaa Pump Station was organized. This visit provided participants with a unique opportunity to witness the actual conditions on-site, gaining valuable insights and further solidifying their understanding of pump systems.

The workshop embraced an interactive and participatory approach, utilizing parallel group sessions to encourage collaboration and comprehensive exploration of technical and financial aspects. The diverse expertise and perspectives of the participants greatly enriched the discussions and findings.
