Overview
Egypt hosted COP27 which is the first African COP after COP22 in Morocco. COP27 was very special because it was more into implementation rather than announcements. In addition, one of the most important announcements is the establishment of the long-awaited loss a damage fund to assist the most vulnerable and most affected countries that suffer from climate change. For the first time in COP’s history water was listed as a central issue in the climate discussion and it’s included in the results of the negotiations. For the first time also, there is a water initiative “AWARe”.
The Egyptian Presidency put water at the heart of climate action to overcome global challenges like water scarcity and improve its resources. The roundtables focused on topics such as water security, food security, green hydrogen, climate change and sustainability of vulnerable communities, Innovative finance, decarbonization … etc. As it’s the first for water topics to be included in the heart of the COP27 topics and with the existence of a specialized water pavilion.
