Overview

Safe Coast Session at Cairo Water Week 2024 | ICZM (SC | ECCADP session)

We had 2 sessions started with a discussion between Dr. Mohamed Youssef and Dr. Mohamed Ahmed about whether Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) is the answer towards a climate resilient and safe Mediterranean coast in Egypt. The 2 sesions showed over 120 participants from governmental and non-governmental sectors. The session also featured experts including Dr. Ali Saber, Dr. Mohamed Bayomy, Eng. Mona Mouslehy, and others.

 Key topics covered:

- Severe Climate Impact & Adaptation Needs: Rising temperatures and Egypt's vulnerability to sea-level rise underscore the need for data-driven, tech-based strategies for coastal protection and resilience.

- Collaborative Action & Strategic Adaptation: Emphasis on integrating government, private sectors, and public partnerships like JCAR and ECCADP, alongside advanced modeling for building sand dune dikes and managing coastal risks.

- Data & Technology for Safety: The National Observation System and Early Warning Systems enhance disaster preparedness, while beach safety improvements, like at El Nakheel, were also discussed.

- Capacity Building: Projects and training programs aim to strengthen local disaster management and climate resilience.

Conclusion: A unified coastal protection strategy, improved data sharing, and investments in advanced technology were recommended to boost resilience against future risks.

A big thank you to all participants and speakers for their valuable insights! Let's continue this important dialogue and work together to safeguard our coasts.
