Kafr El Sheikh, Egypt, April 17, 2024 —

In a remarkable continuation of its mission to foster innovation in agriculture for the research activity Assessing the Impacts of Irrigation Improvements and Innovations (A4I), the Joint Cooperation for Applied Research (JCAR) proudly announces the success of its recent field visit to Kafr El Sheikh. Held in collaboration with the Soil, Water and Environment Research Institute (SWERI), the expedition brought together experts and local farmers for a day of insightful dialogue and hands-on experience.

The visit, which took place amidst the vibrant landscapes of Kafr El Sheikh, saw the participation of esteemed professionals including Dr. Eric Smaling, leader of the A4I team, and Dr. M. El-Kholy Director of SWERI, among others. Together, they engaged in discussions aimed at unraveling the complexities of wheat cultivation and exploring avenues for improvement.

The heart of the visit lay in the interactions with local farmers, whose firsthand accounts illuminated the challenges they face, particularly in the realms of salinity treatments and modern irrigation techniques. These exchanges not only provided valuable insights but also underscored the importance of marrying scientific expertise with practical wisdom for sustainable agricultural solutions.

Dr. Hesham Abo Elsaude of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) played a pivotal role in bridging local efforts with global initiatives, highlighting the interconnectedness of agricultural innovation on a global scale.

Reflecting on the significance of the visit, Dr. Eric Smaling, A4I team leader remarked, "This expedition exemplifies the power of collaboration in driving agricultural progress. The insights gained here will undoubtedly inform our efforts to elevate wheat cultivation techniques and enhance agricultural sustainability."

Expressing gratitude for the participation of all involved, Nikki Leyte of Brabantse Delta Water Board stated, "I would like to thank you again in this way and let you know later that we thought it was great that we could join in today! We found it very interesting and heard and saw some useful things. I am curious about the further results of the project."

The success of the field visit is a testament to the collective dedication of the JCAR team, NWRC, SWERI, and all participants involved from MWRI and MALR, Kafr el Sheikh governorate, members of the private sector and water user association. Their commitment to advancing agricultural innovation sets a precedent for collaborative action in addressing the challenges of our time.
