Overview
The Egypt Sea Level Rise (SLR) Hackathon, held from February 26th to 29th, 2024, in Ain Sokhna, has successfully concluded. This event, sponsored by JCAR, IPDC, and ECCADP, and organized by a team of national and international experts, brought together a diverse group of 45 experts to address the escalating threat of sea level rise to the North Egyptian coastal cities and the Nile Delta.
The primary aim of the hackathon was to explore effective pathways for climate-resilient socio-economic development in these vulnerable regions. By combining the expertise of researchers, professionals, and policymakers, the hackathon focused on producing policy-relevant discussion document including evidence-based solutions that could enhance future adaptation strategies.
The intensive four-day Hackathon resulted in the development of innovative adaptation measures tailored to the specific challenges of the Nile Delta and Egyptian coast. Teams worked collaboratively on two main tasks: mapping the consequences of SLR (Task A) and exploring potential solutions to mitigate these effects (Task B). The deliverables included detailed assessments of SLR impacts on water, agriculture, infrastructure, health, and environment, complemented by strategic solution tracks such as protection, accommodation, and relocation. Teams utilized advanced modelling software such as #SFINCS, #FIAT, and #RIBASIM, with additional models and methods like #SEAWAT for saltwater intrusion, alongside detailed analyses of drainage pumping stations and #DALYS.
This event was made possible through the collaboration of Deltares, the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources & Irrigation (MWRI), and the National Water Research Center - NWRC with invaluable support from the JCAR project, the International Panel on Deltas and Coastal Areas (IPDC) and the #ECCADP projects.
The Egypt SLR Hackathon has set a precedent for future interdisciplinary collaboration. The event not only facilitated a deep understanding of the complex dynamics of sea level rise but also fostered a proactive environment for generating practical solutions. The insights and outcomes from the hackathon are expected to guide significant policy discussions and help frame Egypt’s strategies for sustainable development in the face of climate change challenges.
JCAR project was proud to sponsor the event alongside IPDC and the #ECCADP projects.
